Women across the country have put their five-minute falsie application on hold to try a more time-consuming yet beautifying experience. Ask yourself this: Why beat your entire face when your eyes alone can create "the look" for you? The art of lash extensions is a technique in which synthetic lashes are precisely glued to each strand of your natural lash. These fibers curled to perfection create an illusion of volume and are truly an eye catcher (yes, the corny pun was intended). I have gotten lash extensions quite a few times so what good would it be if I did not share my gems and honest opinion with all of you. Are you interested in this semi permanent application? Do you wonder if it is the right choice for you? Here are all my takeaways on everything you need to know before diving into your new lash journey.
Why I Got Lashed
In all honesty I was hesitant at first. I heard so many people say it damages your natural lashes which I was obviously trying to avoid. My natural lashes were fine but my mascara was no match for the fullness I saw extensions give. The more images I came across the more I fell in love. I was on the hunt for a technician in my local area. It was tough because I already live in a small town and I was not a fan of everyone's work or professional outlet. Stalking websites, Instagram, and TikTok any sort of media platform the business had I viewed. I took into account their credentials, professionalism, cleanliness at the salon, and client reviews/ testimonials. Once I read over salon policies, reached out to the owner, and established a sense of trust I went forth with booking.
Consult With A Licensed Professional
With the lash industry skyrocketing and the demand being so high it seems like everyone is indulging in the money making craft. It is important to receive all the information you need in order to make a confident decision on whether or not you would like to pursue the service. A licensed professional will educate you through a step-by-step consultation. The consultation is typicaly composed of what to expect throughout the service such as how long it will take, your desired look, cost, and any other concerns you may have. Some of my personal questions included: Will this irritate my eyes? How long will the lashes last? How are the tools being used properly disinfected? If you cannot fully trust them by the end of the consult, find a new technician. Incorrect application and misuse of products can lead to eye irritation, infection, or blindness. Your health and safety is top priority and non-negotiable. With that being said, put it in the hands of someone who does not just look at you as profit but cares for you with passion.
My Natural Lashes Before Application
Preparation
Heat and steam are to be avoided at least twenty four hours after application so always take a shower prior to your appointment. Come with a fresh face free of any makeup. Oil based products around the eye are a no go. The adhesive may become less effective if oils break down the bond. This entire process is solely based on precision and can take anywhere from two to four hours so a comfortable hairdo, outfit, and good meal are a must. If you’re like me and fall asleep within the first twenty minutes a cozy blanket will get you right- you can thank me later.
Style
Style depends on width, length, and curl shape. I love the looks that will never go out of style. I also take into consideration my lifestyle. I typically go for a less dramatic but full appearance so I'll usually end up doing classic or a hybrid set. I tell my lash tech something natural with a cat-eye edge and she arranges the length of each extension upon my request.
Upkeep
Aside from how the extensions were applied it all boils down to the maintenance. They should last about six to eight weeks but proper lash care is a must for cleanliness and longevity. Oils from your hair, skin, sweat, and dust cause a buildup of dirt. I made sure to clean my lashes everyday as instructed. The process only consisted of water, soap, a lash brush, and spoolie. To avoid damaging your natural lashes, refrain from touching, tugging, or pulling out the extensions. It can be tempting but trust me when I say in this case the spoolie is your best friend.
Expense
While the look is stunning, getting lashes can become another bill on its own as if we did not have enough already. With that being said, I try to only get them done when I know I have a special occasion. Every business is run differently so prices are bound to vary. This is an investment. As opposed to having a mindset of who's the cheapest, realize you are getting your money's worth. Whether you choose to get lash extensions, put on falsies, or use a mascara and curler just make sure you are being safe and it is conducive to your lifestyle.
